Imagine you’ve pitched the hot tent beside your SUV, the light is fading, and you want your first stove fire to feel calm instead of rushed. A checklist you’ve already run through in the driveway helps.
Here’s the short version of what to do before you light the stove: confirm fire/stove rules for the site, pitch the hot tent with full stove-jack clearance, stage water + extinguish gear within arm’s reach, assemble pipe with spark arrestor, crack vents as the tent maker specifies, and keep a walk path from the SUV hatch to the tent door. Skip the stove tonight if there is a fire ban, you arrived after dark with no practice pitch, wood is soaked, or anyone in the party will not follow CO / ventilation rules.
This is the field checklist companion to SUV camping hot tent & stove for cold nights (buy vs stay-in-SUV) and hot tent vs sleeping in the SUV.

Pre-trip: pack once, not at the trailhead
Print or screenshot this table. Cross items off in the driveway.
| Item | Why | Packed? |
|---|---|---|
| Hot tent with stove jack + stuff sack | Shelter; jack must match stove pipe OD | ☐ |
| Foldable tent stove + carry case | Heat + cook surface | ☐ |
| Stove pipe sections + spark arrestor | Exhaust path; many forests require arrestor | ☐ |
| Heat-resistant gloves + small poker | Handling door / rearranging wood | ☐ |
| Fireproof mat / ground sheet under stove (if manufacturer / land rules call for it) | Ember / melt protection | ☐ |
| Lighter + waterproof matches + tinder | Wet-wood insurance | ☐ |
| Water jug or bucket (≥1 gal / 4 L staged at tent) | Kill the fire fast | ☐ |
| Compact shovel or folding saw (where legal) | Level pad / process wood | ☐ |
| Headlamp + spare batteries | Night strike and ash check | ☐ |
| CO awareness plan (verbal) | Who opens vents; abort symptoms | ☐ |
Optional if you only want a social fire with no stove-jack shelter: a portable smokeless fire pit (FireHiking’s was out of stock at FireHiking as of October 9, 2026; check the FireHiking store for restock) — see smokeless fire pit guide.
At the parking pad (before zipper opens)
- Rules check — campground map, fire ring only?, stove OK?, wood cutting banned?, seasonal order?
- Wind — note direction; door and hatch should not face a smoke blast into the SUV cabin.
- Egress — leave a clear path from driver door and rear hatch to tent door; guy lines outside hatch arc (RAV4/CR-V hatches swing wide).
- Pad — stove feet need near-level dirt/gravel; scoop high spots, do not balance on a root.
- Wood plan — buy bundles or gather dead-and-down only where legal. Wet wood = smoke + incomplete burn + frustration.
Pitch order (first successful light)
| Step | Action | Fail if you skip |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stake / pole tent to standing shape | Stove jack moves while pipe is hot |
| 2 | Confirm jack collar + heat fabric intact | Direct nylon-to-pipe contact |
| 3 | Place stove under jack; center the pipe path | Pipe leans into fabric |
| 4 | Assemble pipe up through jack; add spark arrestor | Embers / ban violation |
| 5 | Stage water within reach; gloves on | Panic scramble mid-flare |
| 6 | Open door/vent per tent instructions before lighting | CO / smoke buildup |
| 7 | Small starter fire; watch draft 5–10 min | Blow-out or smoke-back |
| 8 | Only then cook or settle in for heat | Overloading a cold stove |
Practice this sequence once at home or a local site before a remote cold trip. The foldable titanium stove packs small enough for a driveway dry-run.
Hybrid SUV workflow (most TrailCab readers)
Many weekenders sleep in the cargo bay and use the hot tent as a heated porch for dinner and morning coffee.
| Phase | SUV | Hot tent |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive | Mattress / bags stay staged | Pitch + stove setup |
| Evening | Hatch for gear only | Stove on; cook / dry socks |
| Sleep | Beds in vehicle | Fire dead out or not left unattended |
| Morning | Coffee kit | Optional short re-light, then cold-pack stove |
| Depart | Drive | Ash cold; tent bagged |
Do not pipe a wood stove into the cabin. Do not run any combustion heater in a sealed cargo bay.
Safety abort list
Stop and kill the fire (water, stir, check cold) if:
- Headache, nausea, confusion, or sleepy “flu” feeling indoors
- Fabric browning / melting smell near the jack
- Wind shifts smoke hard into the tent with vents already open
- Kids or dogs unsupervised near stove body / pipe
- You need to leave camp or sleep in the SUV with the stove still hot
Carbon monoxide is colorless. Fresh air is the fix — get out, then deal with the fire.
Pack-down checklist (before the key turns)
- ☐ Fire cold to the touch (not “looks out”)
- ☐ Ash disposed only where the land manager allows
- ☐ Pipe cool enough to bag without melting the case
- ☐ Stove folded / cased; no live embers in seams
- ☐ Tent dry enough to stuff, or loosely bagged for driveway dry-out
- ☐ Guy lines and stakes accounted for (count them)
- ☐ Water jug emptied or secured so it cannot soak the mattress
FAQ
How long does a first pitch take?
Plan 30–45 minutes the first time with two people, longer solo in wind or dark. After two practice pitches, many land around 20–30 minutes.
Can I light the stove and then go sleep in the SUV?
Only if the fire is fully out and cold, or someone remains responsible in the tent. Unattended live stoves are how nylon and CO incidents happen. Prefer heat for evening, then dead-out before bed in the vehicle.
What if the site only allows the metal fire ring?
Use the ring or a smokeless fire pit if rules allow portable pits. A stove-jack tent needs explicit stove permission — do not freestyle.
Titanium or steel stove for SUV camping?
Foldable titanium wins on cargo volume in a daily driver. Steel is fine if you have hitch/cargo space and accept weight. Shop current options on FireHiking bestsellers.
Do I need the hot tent if I already sleep OK in the RAV4?
No. Fix sleep setup first. Add a hot tent when cold sitting / drying gear / winter trips are the point — not as a substitute mattress.
